# Stock Market Styles, Sizes, and Regions

Welcome to this market and economic update. In this video, we look beneath the surface of the major stock market indices—and why that view matters for long-term investors.
When most people think about the stock market, they think about the S&P 500, the Nasdaq, or the Dow. Those are useful starting points, but the market is made up of thousands of companies, each responding differently to economic conditions. Over the past year, many parts of the market—including small-cap stocks, value stocks, and international companies—have performed well. Understanding why can help investors stay balanced and build portfolios better aligned with long-term goals.
**Value vs. growth**
Value stocks—companies that trade at lower prices relative to earnings or sales—have outperformed growth stocks over the past year. That is a shift from much of the past decade, when technology and AI-related investments drove strong returns for growth. One reason for the change is the interest rate environment: rates remain near multi-decade highs, which tends to weigh more heavily on growth stocks.
**Small caps vs. large caps**
Small-cap stocks have also outperformed large caps in recent periods. Many smaller industrial and technology companies are benefiting from the AI buildout, supplying equipment and components for data centers and infrastructure. Revenue and earnings growth for a number of these businesses has been quite strong.
**Valuations matter**
Recent performance is only part of the story. Valuations also matter when comparing different parts of the market. Growth stocks—particularly the largest technology companies—are trading near historically high valuations. Value stocks and smaller companies, by comparison, look more attractively priced on measures such as the price-to-book ratio.
That does not mean value or small caps are guaranteed to keep outperforming. Past performance never guarantees future results. But valuation differences help explain why market leadership has shifted, and they are an important input when thinking about portfolio balance.
**The broader lesson**
No single trend lasts forever. Rather than chasing what has worked recently, maintaining an appropriate mix across styles and sizes has historically served investors well over time.
**A global perspective**
The same logic applies outside the U.S. Just as different sizes and styles respond differently to economic conditions, so do markets around the world. Valuations for international stocks—in both developed and emerging markets—remain well below those of U.S. stocks on many measures. Emerging market stocks in particular have performed well this year as earnings growth expectations have improved.
International investing brings its own considerations, including currency fluctuations, geopolitical risks, and regulatory differences. Those same factors are part of why international stocks can behave differently from U.S. stocks—and why they can play a role in a diversified plan.
**Bottom line**
Which parts of the market belong in a portfolio depends on each investor’s goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. The key takeaway: the market is far broader than the handful of large companies that dominate the headlines. Staying balanced across size, style, and geography can help long-term investors avoid over-concentrating in whatever has led most recently.
